Someone Needs to Dust and I’m Outta Here

Oh boy, I think that my maid needs to be fired after seeing all of the dust collecting around here! As you can probably guess, the wedding season and traveling combined have kind of kicked my butt. I’ve still been pretty good about getting images up on the Anna Lynch McClary Photography Facebook Page though. The ironic part is that I’m poking my head in here just to let everyone know that I’m jumping on another airplane tomorrow and will be out of reach for a few days. The next couple of weeks I get to travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Colorado, and even make a stop in Nebraska for weddings and senior sessions. I’m going to miss my bed and my kitties, but it should be a good time filled with lots of great photo opps.

Oh, and when I return, I vow to be a better blogger. To show my seriousness, here is one image from each of the sessions that I shared on Facebook today.

Saying Goodbye

Filed under Personal • Written by Anna @ 4:48 pm

Before you get into this post, I just want to preface that it has nothing to do with my photography, but is instead a personal post and more just for me to write. I know that some people just don’t get the connection that pet owners have with their pets. If you’re one of those people you’ll most definitely want to stop here.

Last night my 22 year old cat had to be put down. Her name was Friskie, a name that only a 4 year old would be so “creative” to give.

Growing up in the country, we had numerous cats that people would drop off when they decided they just didn’t want them anymore. When one of those cats found their way to our home it usually kicked off a routine of me begging to  keep it, my parents saying that we didn’t need another cat (especially my Dad who was far from a cat lover), and me putting food out for it anyway to convice it to stay. My first foster kitties though didn’t tame that easily. Because these two kitties hadn’t had a home, they were as wild as can be. So, imagine a not so sneaky four year old, who wanted nothing more than to hold and love these kitties, trying repeatedly, day after day to catch or at least touch one of two little 6 week old speedy kittens. Slowly but surely, the little black one, who my brother and I so creatively named Blackie, calmed down and would let us pet her. But, the fluffy little tiger striped one wanted nothing to do with rambunctious little me, I can’t imagine why.

I don’t know when she turned around, but for the last 22 years she was my companion, even when she didn’t want to be and would hide under the bed only for me to pull her back out. She even broke my “too tough to like cats” father. You see, all of these strays were essentially our incredibly friendly “barn” cats. I wasn’t allowed to take them inside, although every now and then my mom would let me when dad was at work. Eventually, he gave in though and Friskie began to rule the house. Every single night she would hop up on the arm of his chair and practically demand her pet job.

Of course her death wasn’t a total surprise. After all, how many cats live to be 22? Since we moved out to Indiana, each time I went back home, I would pet her a little extra before I left knowing that it could be the last time I would see her. She always made it to my next trip though, and would even wake me up in the middle of the night with her midnight sprints from one end of the house to the other, to show that she still lived up to her name. Next week when I go home though, Friskie won’t be there and it just won’t be the same.

Sorry for the less than flattering picture Brian. This picture was taken in 1987 not long after Blackie and Friskie found us. My brother and I were on our way to get our Christmas pictures done. I can only imagine that I insisted on one with the kitties before we left. It’s a small miracle that Friskie didn’t tear my fabulous heart tights to shreds.

Slightly Out of Order

I have what seems like a hundred million other images that need to be blogged, but I wanted to get a few of these up while they’re fresh in my memory. This past Sunday our niece and nephew rolled into Fort Wayne on one stop of their Midwest ballpark tour vacation with their mom and dad. One of the big drawbacks of living out here is that we miss out on so much with these two. We packed quite a bit in while they were here though.

The first night’s agenda didn’t go exactly according to plan, however. Mother nature decided to unleash a couple of inches of rain on the field just as Stephanie went down to race Johnny (the TinCaps mascot) at the TinCaps game. She was plenty bummed out, at least until her “new friend” Brad came over the radio and asked if she could come back Monday to race. From pretty much that point until the race the next day, that was all we heard about. She continually insisted that it was her lucky day, after Sunday was scratched from the lucky day list.

She definitely enjoyed the limelight and her big screen time. She even had a few people recognize her up on the concourse which only lamented the fact that she was a celebrity.

After a quick meal, it was onto the play area.

FortWayne009-Anna-Lynch-McClary

I have to laugh at how different these two are already. Brennan is very much a taking it all in kind of kiddo, while even at his age Stephanie wanted to be in the middle of it all. This picture just cracked me up, because it totally described their personalities.

FortWayne245-Anna-Lynch-McClaryFortWayne244-Anna-Lynch-McClary

I was totally impressed by how fearlessly 5 year old Stephanie scaled the huge climbing wall.

One of the perks of having an uncle that spends so much time at the ballpark is that you get to “help” out with the field.

FortWayne13-Anna-Lynch-McClary

The next day we were off to a quick park trip and then time to continue on with the ballpark tour in Chicago.

FortWayne241-Anna-Lynch-McClary

What a bummer it was to miss out on Buehrle’s perfect game by less than 24 hours. Everyone enjoyed U.S. Cellular and Chicago though. Stephanie and Brennan even took a night off of cheering for the Rockies to root on the White Sox.FortWayne242-Anna-Lynch-McClary

It was a bummer to have to leave them before they headed back to Colorado, but the real world and our jobs were calling. Right about now they are probably taking in a game at Wrigley before starting the drive back to Colorado. Thanks for coming out guys, we already miss you!

Dear Mr. FedEx Driver,

Dear Mr. FedEx Driver,

I’m writing you today to apologize for tackling you at my door, and more than likely embarassing you with all of the hugs and kisses I planted on you. You see, I had been looking forward to seeing you with that big box all week. As soon as I heard your diesel engine roar up, all of the patience I had displayed waiting for you… well, it out went out the window.

Might I suggest for next time, killing your engine before you’re in earshot, rolling in, creeping up my stairs, lightly placing the package against my door, knocking and running for your life like you did as a little kid on May Day? I’m afraid that’s the only way that we can avoid an incident like this for future canvas deliveries.

Sincerely,

Embarrassed and Excited in Indiana

In all seriousness, I think opening the big box I got from Simply Canvas this morning was better than Christmas morning 20 years ago! After working in our living room for the past 6 months, patiently waiting for Mitch to get my big beautiful desk built, I have finally been promised a finished office upon my return from Colorado! That of course meant that I could finally order the big canvases I had mapped out for my office.

If I had it my way, the walls would be wallpapered with canvases. However, since I’m trying to play it cool, I opted for three big ones for now. I also have a few other prints coming.

(The vertical is a 24×38, horizontal is 24×36, and the one that you can’t totally see is 24×34.)

Choosing the images was nearly impossible. You can see two of the images that I decided on here and can kind of see the third one, still wrapped up behind the wedding image. I can’t wait to see these hung up and will of course share the finished product with you when I get back!

What’s That?

Is that smugness in his eye? I do believe so. Why wouldn’t he be smug? He knows that it is Monday, and while he takes one of his eight naps today, the rest of America is saying, “It must be Monday,” as they groggily drag themselves out of bed and off to work.

Working at home is great, except when all I want is a nap, and my two lazy coworkers (aka RC, the pictured smug one, and Griffey, she was too lazy to take a picture) are napping once an hour.

Allow Me to Gush

It is currently almost 3:00 a.m. on what is finally the TinCaps Opening Day. I left Parkview Field about 1:00 a.m., and there were quite a few members of the front office still there, putting their finishing touches on their contributions to the big day. On the field were two guys who will probably still be there for a couple more hours, will go home, catch maybe two hours of sleep, grab a quick shower, and head back down to the stadium. Those guys are Grant, the Assistant Groundskeeper, and my husband, the Head Groundskeeper, Mitch.

Like the title says, this post is me bragging a little bit, so be forewarned that the cheesiness begins here. Almost five years ago, in a moment that can only be described as fate, I met Mitch (the fact that he ever even talked to me after that night is a miracle in itself). From pretty much that day on my friends were asking if he had a brother, because they knew there was no way that I was crazy enough to ever give him up. As if treating me like a queen, encouraging me to follow my dream of photography, and being the best friend I could ask for isn’t enough, he is also one of the hardest workers I have ever met. Mitch doesn’t do anything half way. If something isn’t done right, he will start over, and continue to start over until it is perfect. Just tonight when I asked how things were going, he showed his perfectionist side, and voiced his concerns over the couple of spots where the sod hadn’t taken yet. I’ve lost track of the amount of nights that he has pulled all nighters to make sure that his lines are straight in the mow pattern and his on field painting is exactly as he had it pictured. On top of being the kind of man that I can’t help but be incredibly proud of, he has somehow managed to balance those long nights, and the long hours, that working at a ballpark requires, with spending quality time at home.

Tonight as I was getting ready to head home, I was standing on the warning track behind home plate, (trying to keep off of the grass) just taking it all in. All night I could sense the beginning of an absolutely electric atmosphere, and couldn’t help but feel 100% thankful for our far from perfect life, that just seemed pretty perfect tonight.

mitchblog

Hard to believe that the end of September Mitch was finalizing the design for the field and eagerly watching for progress.

mitchblog3

So many fans often take the playing surface for granted… I know I used to. Now that I “get” to hear all about the different varieties of Kentucky Blue that are on the field, which one is coming out of dormancy a little slower than the others, and why Poa is such a bad thing, I appreciate it a LOT more.

videonight

Parkview has already provided so many memorable moments, it is going to be great to see what new ones pop up throughout the season. (Hint: Those who attend the game tomorrow will better understand what was going on in this shot.)

I think this is probably the best “self portrait” of us that I could finish this post with. Thanks for putting up with my cheesiness and allowing me to gush. I’m normally very anti-PDA, so I’m going to consider this giving credit, where credit is due.

Just Like Christmas…

It isn’t opening day, but it is the next best thing… first spring training game! While I enjoy watching basketball, football and hockey, it just isn’t the same as baseball. The end of October leaves me counting down until this very day. My beloved Rockies have their first game today down in Arizona. Here’s hoping this is the beginning of a much better than 2008 season!

Baseball is a way of life in my house. In fact, if it weren’t for baseball we’d probably be living in a cardboard box since it is responsible for Mitch’s paycheck. Last year I joined my two loves and had the opportunity to shoot baseball. While it was a good experience, I think the two are better left separated. Because of the crazy and demanding schedule I missed out on most of wedding season and only got in a select few sessions.

Locally, we’re gearing up for the start of the TinCaps season here in Fort Wayne. Opening day isn’t until April 16th, but the longer hours are starting for Mitch, and I’m hearing more about fertilizer programs, equipment, grass, and dirt. Single game tickets went on sale yesterday and it sounds like it is going to be a packed house that first night. I can’t wait!

The best part of all of this… spring is right around the corner! I’ve been eyeing a new bike, and thinking that I can’t wait until it is nice enough for me to ride down to the ballpark.

baseball-opening-night

We were with a short season team last year, so this opening day wasn’t until the middle of May. The crazy part was that it was COLD that night!

baseball-rockies-cubs

My parents flew in for a weekend and I had a day off. What did we do? Well, we watched baseball of course. By the way, you have no idea how hard it was to get someone to take this picture… can’t say Cubs fans are the friendliest around.

Welcome back baseball!

My Husband Didn’t Listen Very Well

But, I’m not too disappointed! We had decided this year that we were just going to play V-Day low key and stay home. No gifts, no cards, no worry right? Well, after work yesterday Mitch showed up wanting me to shut my eyes and pulled an Anna. You see, I can’t buy gifts ahead of time. I get too excited about giving them and end up starting with letting them guess, and then end up just giving them the gift early. The original eye close I believe was for him to get it in the apartment without me seeing. Then, he started negotiating:

“Do you want me to give you your gift now?”

“Well, I wouldn’t argue, but you don’t have to.”

“Well, I mean, what’s the difference in giving it to you now, and making you wait two days?”

“I see no difference.”;)

“Okay, well close your eyes.”

eyes immediately shut!

“Are you sure  you don’t want me to wait?”

Opens eyes, “Yes, I’m sure. I mean, only if you want to.”

“Anna, close your eyes!”

After what seemed like 10 minutes passed, I finally opened my eyes to a beautiful, brand new acoustic Fender guitar.

All last year I hinted that I really wanted an acoustic guitar for Christmas. The beginning of November we went out to Sweetwater to pick one out, and I chickened out. I told him not to worry about it, that I probably wouldn’t have time to learn. Problem was, when we were back in Colorado for the holidays, I listened to my friend Anya play who had just picked it up. She convinced me to just go for it. Well, seeing as how that was the week before Christmas and I had changed my mind and told Mitch all I wanted was a new camera strap, I didn’t get one.

The past month I had started shopping around again and was set that I really wanted one, but had no idea which one. I can’t tell you how excited I am to start learning. Mitch checked out a bunch of DVD’s from the library for me, and it is so incredibly hard for me to get my work done today as the guitar and DVD’s sit just a few feet away. I’m pretty sure I hear them calling me…

Thanks for not listening Mitch!

I Wish I Were On A Plane…

Filed under Anna Lynch McClary Photography, Personal • Written by Anna @ 12:19 pm

Thursday mornings I usually bum around on my Google Reader checking out blogs for a little bit. Quite a few of my blogs are obviously other photographers. Well, today they are full of posts saying that they won’t be around much the next week because they’re in Vegas for the awesome WPPI conference. Mitch and I worked it out so we were out there last year, but with all of our relocation craziness, we just couldn’t do it this year. I can guarantee you that I won’t miss out on WPPI 2010! I hope everyone who does get to go has a blast and gets a ton out of it, I know you will!

In the meantime, here is a funny video of some big names in the industry poking fun at themselves for a good cause.

Check out WPPI!

Soooo Glad I Waited

I about posted up some pictures from our trip to California yesterday, but I am definitely glad I waited until now. It has been kind of great escaping to all of the sunshine and blue skies from last week, while it has been snowing out and cold (currently 17 out). The majority of my time was spent wandering San Jose while Mitch was at his turf conference. We did manage to do a little sightseeing though. Before I get into the pictures, I should add that some of them are just off of my point and shoot, and some are Mitch’s handiwork. Also, be forewarned that there are quite a few images.

_dsc3257

When we first arrived we had some time to kill so we just walked the streets of San Jose down by the convention center. I fell in love when we came upon this church. All of the detail was just beautiful.

_dsc3259

Oh, I didn’t boost the sky color at all, it was that vibrant!

_dsc3252

_dsc3262

I can’t even begin to tell you how nice it was to not have to be anywhere, or do anything for once. This was the first actual vacation that I’ve been on since my bachelorette party I think. Even when we went to Vegas last year it was for the WPPI convention. Mitch and I decided that it would be nice to vacation together. :)

_dsc3278

Before last week I had never seen the ocean. I had been super close a few times, but was always on a schedule, so it didn’t work out. I’m pretty happy that my first trip was as beautiful as this. We didn’t get down to Santa Cruz until about 4 o’clock our first day, but that was perfect timing for beautiful light.

_dsc3283

My handsome husband taking in the view.

_dsc3297

This pelican was quite the model for me.

_dsc3303

_dsc3271

The sea lions were all over the place.

imgp1163

_dsc3312

When we arrived I was kind of bummed out that there were zero clouds in the sky. I was really wanting a spectaculur sunset. To my surprise it ended up beautifully.

_dsc3330

_dsc3372

One of the days Mitch finished up a little early, so we went over the the Winchester Myster House. It is a mansion that Sarah Winchester built and designed when she thought she was being haunted by the ghosts that were killed by her family’s guns in the Civil War. Her husband was the second president of the Winchester company.

_dsc33421

There were some pretty bizarre things in the house, like a staircase that led only to the ceiling, a window in the floor, doors that went straight into a wall, and even one spot of seven flights of stairs that only moved you up three feet. One of the coolest things for me though, was her collection of Tiffany glass. They estimate the collection to be worth almost $1 million now. Considering this was constructed about 100 years ago, that’s pretty impressive.

_dsc3343

_dsc3397

I really wish I had a wider lens with me that day to really show how massive this place is. If I remember right there are 160 rooms in it.

_dsc3409

This is an insanely detailed gingerbread model of the house.

imgp1175

_dsc3404

_dsc34291

Our last full day we took the train up to San Francisco with some other turf guys.

_dsc3441

This unfortunately was as close as Mitch got to Alcatraz. All week we heard how cool it was and had planned on going. But, by the time we got down there the lines were huge and it was starting to get late. I guess we’ll just have to go back.

_dsc3454

_dsc3459

We all decided that we wanted to see the crookedest street in America, so we looked on the map for the shortest route. Unfortunately it didn’t show elevation changes. Holy smokes did we get a nice workout.

imgp11861

If you turned around you would have seen this. We all noticed right away that everyone there knew how to park on a hill. We also decided that we wouldn’t want to drive a stick here and that it is a pretty good thing that icy roads aren’t the norm.

_dsc34761

We did make it though. I’m pretty glad we just walked it and didn’t drive it.

_dsc3499

We took another slight detour on the way back to the train station to go through China town.

_dsc3505

I can’t say there are many towns we’ve been to that we haven’t gone to the local ballpark. San Francisco was not the exception.

_dsc3510

It is a pretty cool ballpark with the cove right next to it.

_dsc3514

If you’ve made it this far, congratulations!
